Height against the seating
A coffee table should sit at or slightly below the seat height of the chairs around it. Too low and people cannot reach it without leaning forward, which is the most common reason a reception table goes unused.
Surface choice
Reception tables take cups, so a wipeable surface earns its keep. Glass looks excellent and shows every mark within an hour of a visitor arriving.
How many, and where
One per pair of chairs is usually plenty. In reception, a small table within reach of each seat beats one large table nobody can quite get to, particularly when people are holding a coat and a laptop bag.
Round tables with a weighted base are the safest choice in a waiting area, since there are no corners at knee height and nothing to catch a bag on.
