Low beats tall
Storage above shoulder height gets used once and then ignored. A longer run of low units gives the same capacity, doubles as a surface, and breaks up sight lines in open-plan without needing screens.
Tall cupboards make sense against a wall where floor space is genuinely scarce, and for stock nobody needs weekly.
Adjustable shelves
Worth the small premium every time. Fixed shelves are set for the files you own today, and what gets stored changes faster than the furniture does.
Doors or open shelving
Doors hide clutter and keep dust off, which matters for anything stored long-term. Open shelving is quicker to use daily and makes a room feel less boxed in, at the cost of everything on it being on display.
A common compromise is a low run of cupboards with open shelving above at reachable height, which gives you both without a wall of doors.
