Fabric is the practical choice for most offices: warmer in winter, quieter, and usually cheaper per chair when you are buying twenty of them.
When to choose fabric over mesh
Older buildings, ground floors and north-facing rooms all run cool, and a mesh back will feel draughty in them. Fabric also absorbs a little sound, which helps in rooms with hard floors.
Practical points
Check the rub count and pick something mid-toned. Very pale fabrics show everything and very dark ones show dust and hair. If chairs will be shared, a wipeable finish saves more time than it costs.
Buying across a team
Fabric is usually where the numbers work when you are equipping twenty or more desks. Spend the saving on the mechanism rather than on more chairs than you need: a smaller number of properly adjustable chairs will generate fewer complaints than a floor of fixed-back ones.
Order one and live with it for a week first. A chair that feels fine for ten minutes in a showroom can be the wrong chair by Wednesday afternoon.
